Nellie Zimmerman
Nellie Zimmerman was born in Kharkov, Russia and emigrated to
Australia in 1978. Art has always been Nellie’s true
passion and has dominated both her professional and personal
pursuits. As a school child Nellie displayed extraordinary
focus and dedicated many hours to private lessons in oil painting
and sketching.
Since 1994 Nellie ha enjoyed a challenging and successful career
as a graphic designer. Although she thrived in the corporate
world, the birth of her daughter Lara presented her with the
inspiration and opportunity to make painting her primary occupation
as well as her creative outlet. Most of the time Nellie doesn’t
use a paint brush: she blends her paints on canvas using her
fingers, applies paint with a roller, cake icing spatula or a
plastic sauce bottle. She has experimented with different media,
achieving a layered surface effect. In some of her work she has
combined acrylic and oil paint, wax, aerosol paint, sand, impasto
and varnishes.
Nellie’s main inspiration is drawn from nature and the
urban environment as well as her own sense of symbolism, placement
and balance. Nellie’s work has been well received and much
interest has sparked over her technique.
